Peter Schickele's 75th Birthday Concert at Steinway Hall, March 29, 2011: "Dance of Uncertain National Origin" for Trumpet and Piano

Trumpeter Caleb Hudson of the Canadian Brass, and pianist Laura Leon perform Peter Schickele's "Dance of Uncertain National Origin," as part of the concert celebration honoring the composer on his 75th birthday at New York's Steinway Hall.

A clever blending of folkdance rhythms and sonorities, the performance of the first movement from Three Uncharacteristic Pieces for B flat Trumpet and Piano, was introduced by Peter Schickele, which he described in the score as having "echoes of various different cultures-middle Euorpean...for instance..."

The video opens with introductory comments by Schickele, who introduced all of the performances. The evening was hosted by renowned radio announcer Robert Sherman. It was on Robert Sherman's beloved WQXR program "The Listening Room" that trumpeter Raymond Mase (with whom Caleb Hudson studied at The Julliard School) and the composer gave the premiere of the composition during a live broadcast. A special thank you to Eddie Strauss of Steinway & Sons.
