Schickele & Kraft Premieres at American Images at the Piano: Neo-Classic to Nature 1946-2008 Recital at Yamaha Piano Salon

On April 13, 2008, Laura Leon presented a recital at the New York Yamaha Piano Salon, American Images From The Piano: Neo-Classic to Nature 1946-2008.

The program included two World Premieres: Peter Schickele's PRESENTS II (1961-1972), and Leo Kraft's Found In Nature: Music Visualizing a Photographer's Compositions (2008), with digital projection of photographer Barry Rosenthal's Photo Botanicals alongside Laura's live piano performance.

PRESENTS II was in manuscript and had been put aside by Peter Schickele for years, when Laura inquired about it. For Leo Kraft, it was the first time he had been invited to consider composing a piano work where the instrument was not to be "front and center." He was enthusiastic to undertake the collaboration.

Both composers attended the concert, with the audience so appreciative of their being present for the occasion.

The program included works by Eric Ewazen, Vincent Persichetti, Roy Harris (both with whom Peter Schickele had studied at Julliard); and Norman Dello Joio, who had recently turned 95. Unable to attend, Laura drove out to his home on Long Island with Leo Kraft, a few months before the recital. She had the privilege of performing his Third Sonata for him on the very piano on which he had composed it in 1947.
