In Praise of the Bees: THE APIAN WAY by Steven Rosenhaus
The solo piano work "The Apian Way" by Steven Rosenhaus came to be written, following my asking him if he would compose a work to honor and celebrate the bees. That was back in 2010 when concern for the well being of bees was starting to be discussed widely.
The work has two beautiful yet contrasting movements, each reflecting the complicated, hard-working and magnificent daily life of a bee. The first movement, entitled "The Dreams of Bees," was composed in 2011. During its early, "work-in-progess' stage, I included a "preview" during a concert honoring Steven Rosenhaus' completion of his 2010 Composer Residency at Flushing Town Hall.
The second movement, "Busy" which captures the extraordinary energy and focus with which bees undertake collecting pollen was composed a while later, and the entire work had its premiere during the Composer's Voice concert at the Jan Hus Church in NYC.
The film "The Apian Way" was produced by film maker and photographer Karen Leon.
The 2024 recording took place at Cover City Sound Studios, John Arbuckle, Recording Engineer.
