MASHA’S ARIGATO: Warsaw to Japan (1939-1941) is an original work in tribute to Masha Leon (1931-2017) by her 3 daughters, and an expression of gratitude to Chiune Sugihara, the heroic World War II Japanese diplomat in Kaunas, Lithuania--and the people of Japan. Sugihara issued over 2,000 transit visas to Japan, saving the lives of thousands of Jewish refugees who fled to Lithuania.

Utwór MASHA’S ARIGATO: Warsaw to Japan (1939–1941) jest hołdem trzech córek Maszy Leon (1931–2017) dla matki i wyrazem wdzięczności dla bohaterskiego dyplomaty japońskiego w Kownie Chiune Sugihary i dla narodu japońskiego. Sugihara uratował życie żydowskim uciekinierom na Litwie wydając przeszło 2 tys. japońskich wiz tranzytowych.

Masha was a Holocaust survivor born in Warsaw, Poland who became an internationally renonwned columnist. She and her mother Zelda Bernstein received life-saving transit visas issued by Sugihara and found sanctuary in Japan, arriving in Tsuruga in February 1941. At age 10, she learned Japanese during her six months in Kobe.

Masza urodziła się w Warszawie. Przeżyła Holokaust. Po wojnie została znaną na całym świecie felietonistką. Jej matka Zelda Bernsztejn otrzymała dla nich wizy wystawione przez Sugiharę. W lutym 1941 r. wylądowały w Japonii, w mieście Tsuruga. Podczas sześciomiesięcznego pobytu w Kobe, dziesięcioletnia Masza nauczyła się japońskiego.

MASHA’S ARIGATO begins with her childhood in Warsaw. In September 1939, World War II began and her father Mordechai Bernstein left Warsaw. In November, she and her mother escaped Warsaw and had a harrowing journey to Vilnius, Lithuania.

MASHA’S ARIGATO rozpoczyna się od dzieciństwa Maszy w Warszawie. Jej ojciec Morduch Bernsztejn wydostał się z Warszawy już we wrześniu 1939 r., a Masza z matką z trudnymi do opisania przeszkodami dotarły do Wilna w listopadzie.

The family reunited, and on August 17, 1940, her father went to Kaunas and met with Chiune Sugihara from whom he received the transit visas to Japan. Not long after, the Soviets---then occupying Lithuania--sent thousands of people to Siberia, including her father [he survived the war].

Spotkali się 17 sierpnia 1940 r., ojciec Maszy zdobył dla nich wizy do Japonii od Chiune Sugihary. Niedługo potem okupujący Litwę Sowieci zesłali na Syberię tysiące ludzi, m.in. jej ojca. Przeżył wojnę.

Masha and her mother remained in Vilnius and on February 6, 1941, they took a train to Kaunas. They left Kaunas by plane to Moscow, where they boarded the Trans-siberian Railway to Vladivostok. And across the Sea of Japan, finally arriving by Japanese boat at the Port City of Tsuruga on February 24, 1941. On the same day, they arrived in Kobe.

Masza z matką pozostały w Wilnie do 6 lutego 1941 r., kiedy wyruszyły w podróż pociągiem do Kowna, stamtąd samolotem do Moskwy, a dalej Koleją Transsyberyjską do Władywostoku. Dotarły do portu Tsuruga statkiem przez Morze Japońskie 24 lutego 1941 r. i tego samego dnia znalazły się w Kobe.

The second part of MASHA’S ARIGATO interweaves her favorite Yiddish folk song A Kleyn Meydele (A Little Girl) and Sakura, the traditional Japanese folk song that celebrates the beauty of cherry blossoms in springtime. This piano work honors her beloved Yiddish culture and cherished time in Japan.

Druga część MASHA’S ARIGATO to kompozycja, w której ulubiona ludowa piosenka Maszy w jidysz, „A Kleyn Meydele” (Mała dziewczynka), łączy się z „Sakurą”, japońską piosenką sławiącą czar kwitnących wiśni. Ten utwór na fortepian upamiętnia ukochaną kulturę jidysz Maszy i szczęśliwe miesiące spędzone w Japonii.

Sugihara's heroic actions set in motion the tireless efforts of Tadeusz Romer, the Polish Ambassador to Japan. Romer’s actions aided Polish Jewish refugees in Kobe and found countries that granted wartime entry for Polish and Polish Jewish refugees. With gratitude to Romer, Masha and her mother were allowed into Canada.

Z Sugiharę współpracował polski ambasador w Japonii Tadeusz Romer, który znalazł państwa gotowe przyjąć Polaków i polskich Żydów przebywających w Kobe. Dzięki niemu Masza z matką trafiły do Kanady.

The World Premiere of Masha’s Arigato: Warsaw to Japan (1939-1941) was given by Ms. Nobue Douda on August 25, 2024 at the Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum in Tsuruga, Japan. Laura Leon gave the North American Premiere on the same day at a private event in NYC.

MASHA’S ARIGATO: Warsaw to Japan (1939–1941) miało swoją światową premierę w wykonaniu panny Nobue Douda w Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum 25 sierpnia 2024 r. Jego północnoamerykańska premiera w wykonaniu Laury Leon miała miejsce tego samego dnia na prywatnym koncercie w Nowym Jorku.

The World Premiere of the first version of Masha’s Arigato was given in Japan by Ms. Nobue Douda on the occasion of the Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum’s reopening ceremony for its expansion on November, 3, 2020. Established in 2008 to document and preserve the history of the Port of Tsuruga, the ceremony also marked the 100th anniversary of over 700 Polish orphans from Siberia arriving in Japan in the early 1920s following the Russian Revolution; and the 80th anniversary of Chiune Sugihara issuing the life-saving visas to Japan during WWII. Laura Leon gave its North American Premiere at a NYC event given by Japanese Ambassador Mikio Mori honoring Tsuruga Mayor Takanobu Fuchikami on October 12, 2022.

Pierwotna wersja MASHA’S ARIGATO została po raz pierwszy zagrana publicznie 3 listopada 2020 r. przez p. Douda na otwarciu rozbudowanego Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum. Uroczystość upamiętniła setną rocznicę przybycia 700 polskich sierot z Syberii po rewolucji październikowej i 80-tą rocznicę wydania przez Chiune Sugiharę wiz japońskich, które uratowały życie 2 tys. osób. Muzeum powstało w 2008 r. dla udokumentowania historii portu Tsuruga. Północnoamerykańska premiera utworu w wykonaniu Laury Leon odbyła się w Nowym Jorku 12 października 2022 r. podczas imprezy urządzonej przez ambasadora Mikio Mori na cześć burmistrza miasta Tsuruga, Takanobu Fuchikami.

The 1941 Japanese fan is one of Masha Leon’s childhood mementos from her home in Kobe, Japan. It was donated by her family to the Port of Humanity Tsuruga Museum on October 12, 2022.
